Choosing the Right Wood for Your Kitchen

8 March 2026

The timber you choose for your kitchen cabinetry will define its character for decades. At Woodhouse, we work with a carefully curated selection of woods — each chosen for its structural integrity, aesthetic qualities, and how it ages over time.

Oak remains the most popular choice for kitchen cabinetry in South Africa. Its tight grain, natural warmth, and exceptional durability make it ideal for both painted and natural finishes. We source our oak from sustainable suppliers and select each board for consistency of grain and colour.

For clients who prefer a lighter, more contemporary feel, ash offers a beautiful alternative. Its pale colour and subtle grain pattern work particularly well in modern kitchen designs. Ash takes stains and oils beautifully, allowing for a wide range of finish options.

Walnut is the choice for those seeking rich, dark tones. Its deep chocolate hues and flowing grain create a sense of warmth and sophistication. We often use walnut for feature elements — an island, a pantry unit, or a statement shelf — contrasted against lighter surrounding cabinetry.

Regardless of the species, every piece of timber that enters our workshop is carefully inspected and acclimatised before use. This attention to material preparation is what separates handcrafted cabinetry from mass-produced alternatives — and it is why a Woodhouse kitchen develops character rather than deteriorating over time.
